About Us
Learn who we are, why we exist, and how we deliver needs-based relief to low- and moderate-income borrowers facing genuine financial hardship.
Our Mission
Zero Balance Fund relieves financial hardship for low- and moderate-income Americans burdened by student loan debt. We provide needs-based debt-relief grants — paid directly to loan servicers — to qualifying borrowers selected through an independent, objective review process.
Why this exists
Michel T
Founder & CTO
Zero Balance Fund started with a hallway conversation. Coming from Canada — where higher education is heavily subsidized — I was struck to hear seasoned colleagues, professionals with more than a decade of experience, still quietly carrying student loan balances.
That weight followed them well into the prime of their careers, shaping decisions about housing, family, and career risk in ways I hadn't imagined. The concept of debt that trails a hard-working person into their forties — and quietly creates anxiety for people making a modest living — wasn't something I had grown up seeing.
The idea for Zero Balance Fund was born in that short conversation. The goal is simple: take real, accountable, needs-based action so that fewer Americans keep paying for their education long after the diploma is on the wall — and hopefully change the lives of many people for years to come.
Background: 30+ years in the software industry, with a deep focus on applied AI over the last year — bringing that operational and technical experience to the build of a transparent, low-overhead nonprofit.
Our Vision
A future where the weight of student loan debt no longer prevents low- and moderate-income Americans from building stable lives, supporting their families, or contributing fully to their communities. Zero Balance Fund exists to deliver meaningful, needs-based relief to borrowers in genuine financial hardship — one verified award at a time.
All funds are distributed through a transparent, independent review process based on demonstrated financial need. Donors support our charitable mission — they do not select individual recipients.
Our Values
Transparency
Every dollar is tracked, audited, and reported. We publish financial summaries so the public can see how our charitable fund is deployed.
Impact
We measure success by hardship relieved. Every approved award is paid directly to a loan servicer on behalf of a qualifying recipient.
Equity
Awards are prioritized for low- and moderate-income borrowers facing the greatest financial hardship, regardless of background.
Independence
An independent review committee selects recipients on objective, needs-based criteria. Donors do not influence individual award decisions.
How We Operate
Zero Balance Fund operates with a lean, volunteer-driven model. Donations are pooled into a dedicated fund and disbursed directly to federal student loan servicers on behalf of approved applicants. We never send money to borrowers directly — payments go straight to the servicer, guaranteeing that every dollar reduces real debt.
Our review team evaluates each application based on financial need, verification of loan documents, and available funds. Applicants can track their status in real time through their dashboard, and donors can see aggregate impact data showing exactly how contributions are being used.
Administrative costs are kept to an absolute minimum. We leverage technology and automation to maximize the percentage of every donation that reaches borrowers.
